Science 8:  Today were wrote the Practice Final and scored it.  We did the "penny in the cup lab", and made a number of lists to study material we have learned in past units.  Everyone was given a progress report, showing how their term 4 grade is calculated.

On Tuesday morning we will have our Final Exam.  You need to have pencils, a ruler, calculator, and an eraser.  I will provide you with a data page that has a world map with Tectonic Boundaries, and the Periodic table of the Elements.  Your binder, or at least its contents, will be collected on Tuesday morning too.

Science 8:  Today we reviewed microscopes and Cell Theory.  We spent time looking at pond water from Williamson's Lake, and saw many types of Zooplankton and Phytoplankton.  On Monday we will have a mini practice final, and on Tuesday we will have our Final Exam and I will collect your binder.

Science 8:  Geology Test today.  We did part II of the Heat Transfer Lab.  Practice Final on Monday.  Final Exam on Tuesday, June 20th.  Be sure to bring your calculator (not a phone), ruler, pencils and pens.  Please tidy your binder as I will want to collect it from you on June 20th.

Final Exam preparation skills we have covered so far: planning calendar, verbal review with a partner, binder organization, personal review of binder contents, sleeping with textbook under pillow for osmotic transfer of information.  Still to cover:  condensed notes, online resources, redoing portions of old assignments and labs.

A short summary of the content we covered this Semester:

Safety:  Lab safety
Biology:  Cell structure and Function;  How cells are Organized into tissues, organs, systems; Immune System.
Chemistry:  Kinetic Molecular Theory, Atomic Structure, Measurement (Density, mass, volume)
Optics and Waves:  Wave theory, Mirrors (plane, convex, concave), Lenses (convex, concave), the Human eye and vision
Earth Science:  Seismology , Continental Drift, Theory of Plate tectonics, Volcanoes

Science 8:  Today we did the Geology Practice Test, which is due on Thursday.  There will be a Gology test on Thursday.  We also started the Heat Transfer Lab, with a little experiment on Conduction.  At the bottom of your data table, explain how heat is conducted through a metal rod, using the Kinetic Molecular Theory.

Science 8:  Today we reviewed volcanos.  We also spent 10 minutes studying Chemistry (atoms, Kinetic Molecular Theory, changes of state, elements, density, etc).  We finished off with a WS on the world's Plate Boundaries.

Test on Geology Thursday.  Practice Final on Monday, June 19.  Final Exam on Tuesday, June 20.

Science 8:  Today we reviewed the layers of the earth and the 3 types of locations where volcanos can form.   Time was spent finishing the questions for Lab 17A, but I did not make this due Monday.  We finished the Volcano! video, about the Kraffts and their volcano chasing lifestyle.   This is a weekend for final exam preparation.  Spend some time with a classmate, or helpful adult, and have them quiz you on the contents of your Science binder.  Study for recall, not recognition:)

Science 8:  We marked pg 496 # 1-3 and reviewed the layers of the Earth.   We took notes on Volcanos, followed by reading section 18.2 from a hand-out, followed by the first 28 minutes of National Geographic Volcano!.  The second half was devoted to Lab 17A:  Clocking Tectonic Plates.  The procedure is due on Friday, and I will give you time to do Analysis a-e & g on Friday.  Your final is on June 20th.

Tuesday, June 6, 2017

Science 8:  Today I checked that pg 508 # 1-6, 8,10,12,13 was done, and we self marked it.  Then we reviewed the anatomy of a plant cell and animal cell.  Finally we read section 17.1 from a hand-out, sketched a labelled and coloured a cross sections of the Earth, and did pg 496 # 1-3 in fine sentences.

Monday, June 5th

Read 17.4 from a hand out, and do pg 508 # 1-6, 8,10,12,13 in fine sentences.  Today we took notes on the Theory of Plate Tectonics.

Friday, June 2nd

Read section 11.1 (pg 402 to 407).  Do activity 11-1 on pg 403.

Thursday, June 1st

Today we spent time on Lab 13E, and this is due on Friday, June 2nd.  We also spent time on the Continental Drift hand out (cut and paste, and questions on second last page), which is also due on Friday.

We learned about magnetic fields, which point from the North pole of a magnet, to the South pole.  We learned that fridge magnets are permanent magnets and that a coin that attracts to a permanent can become temporarily magnetized.  We did lab 4.3, where we drew magnetic fields around magnets and combinations of magnets.

At the end of class we watched a 10 minute video segment that showed our best guess for the formation of our planet.  This was shown to explain partially why the earth's interior is very hot.

Tuesday, May 30th

Today we did Lab 13E, which is not due Thursday.
