Science 10:  Today we looked at some slides showing aspects of Nuclear energy.  We read section 10.1 and pg 279 # 1-5, 11,12 in sentences are due Thursday.   I also took in a few more Calorimetry Labs, which were due Monday.

Science 8:  Today we took note on Atomic Structure, and learned about electrons, protons, and neutrons.  We read a hand-out that explained atomic structure, and answered a few questions but these are not due on Thursday.  I also collected pg 192 from Monday if it was completed.  If I did not get pg 192 today please have it ready for Thursday.

Earth Science 11:  We started off with a short review of volcanism which we started yesterday, and a look at the volcano erupting in Bali.  We talked about viscosity increasing with content of silicates, as well as CO2 and water in magma.  We did a short assignment on 3 categories of Volcanos:  cinder cones, shield volcanos, and composite cones.  We then read pg 254 - 257 and made a labelled sketch of a volcano cross section, showing its anatomy.  This sketch and labels (with short descriptions) is due on Wednesday.  I collected last day's crossword on Tectonic Plates.

Science 10:    I collected the Calorimetry Lab today.  Today we spent the 2nd of 2 classes researching a topic of your choice that shows your learning about local and/or global impacts of energy transformations from technologies.

Topic Choices include:   hydro electric dams, wind farms, biofuel production, natural gas production, power grids, fossil fuel pipelines, solar generating stations, coal fired electricity generation, geothermal heating, agriculture, liquid fossil fuels, glaciers, nuclear electrical stations, fuel cells, electric powered vehicles... ask me if you are interested in some other energy-related topic.

Impacts could be on the land, water or air in the area where the energy is extracted, processed, or used.  The impacts could also be on the people or other organisms that live near these places.  Be specific about the places and countries you are learning about.

Today is a learning day.  Take notes in a new Word Document to record your learning. Save images that demonstrate key ideas.   Give your notes a descriptive file name (eg.  Solar boiler Notes Smith Science 10) and save them to your OneDrive.  Share the file with Mr. Gale (ggale@sd19.bc.ca) by the end of today's class.

Earth Science  11:  Today we reviewed Plate Tectonic with a short crossword.  We then saw how Wood Metal demonstrates melting point depression, an important notion in the production of magma that eventually forms Volcanos.  After a short discussion about viscosity, we watched a short doc on Mt. St. Helens, then finished by reading pg 250 - 253.

Science 8:  After reviewing the Periodic Table, we did pg 209 # 1,2,4-7 in quality point form from a hand-out.  We then sorted about 550 ribbons from the OK zone high school swimming championships!  Thanks for your help!  pg 209 is not due Tuesday.

Wednesday, November 22, 2017

Science 8:  We read pg 260  to 265 and wrote one key idea from each of the 14 paragraphs in this segment.  We also did the 3 practice problems on pg 265.  We then finished up our density lab.   After this, we did the Can Implosion lab, and wrote an explanation in paragraph form about why our can imploded.  We used the key terms gas, liquid, condensation, pressure, deform

Science 10:  In the first half, we did a calorimetry lab to determine the amount of chemical energy stored in a walnut.  My room smells quite bad, thanks to that.  All of the discussion questions are due on Friday.  We started a research project in the second half:

Show that you know some local and global impacts of energy transformations from technologies.

What you could learn about:   hydro electric dams, wind farms, biofuel production, natural gas production, power grids, fossil fuel pipelines, solar generating stations, coal fired electricity generation, geothermal heating, world food production, liquid fossil fuels, glaciers, nuclear electrical stations, fuel cells... ask me if you are interested in some other energy-related topic.

Impacts could be on the land, water or air in the area where the energy is extracted, processed, or used.  The impacts could also be on the people or other organisms that live near these places.  Be specific about the places you are learning about.

Today is a learning day only.  Take notes in a new Word Document to record your learning. Later we will find a way for you to present your information.

Science 8:  Today we wrote our Optics Unit Test.  No work is due Monday.

Science 10:  Today we wrote our Chemistry Unit Test.  No work is due on Monday.

Earth Science 11:  Today we read from 206 to 211, about the structure of the Earth.  After a short video and discussion, we created a labelled diagram showing the layers of the earth, the relative thicknesses, and approximate composition of each layer.  We also spent time on the Triangulation Lab, the pink Speed of P and S wave lab, and on the Resource poster.  All 4 of these items (2 labs, poster, diagram of earth layers) are due on Monday.

Science 8:  Optics Practice Test is due Friday.  We will have an optics test on Friday.  Volume measurement WS is due on Friday.

Science 10:  Chemistry test on Friday.  We started a lab on Energy Transformations in a Bouncing Ball but this is not due on Friday.

Science 10: Chemistry Practice Test, due Wednesday.  We will have our Chemistry test on Friday.

Science 8:  Finish the placemat on Optics Applications and pg 223 # 1-8 in sentences.

Earth Science 11:  Today we spent in the IT lab, researching one renewable resource, and one non-renewable resource.  Many of you have started constructing your poster with each category on left or right.

Wednesday, November 8, 2017

Earth Science 11:  Today we began Seismology.  After reading pg 193-196 (on your own paper, define the key terms), we did a lab on finding the epicentre of an earthquake.  We finished with a Nova documentary on the Himalayan earthquake of 2015.
