Chemistry 12:  Complete Experiment #7 and do # 1-16 in Hebdon Chem 12.  We took notes on "Factors that Affect Reaction Rates".  I collected signed course outlines.  On Friday I will check your supplies (calculator, coil bound lab notebook,  binder, pens and pencils, 20 sheets of graph paper, hair elastic for labs (if this applies to you).

Science 10, Period 56: Today we discussed Science Safety guidelines and created a map of our classroom showing safety equipment.  We took notes on DNA, then read 15.4 from a hand-out, and did Questions 1-5 in sentences.  In the second half we reviewed cell division and created a cut and paste showing the cell cycle.  We finished off by watching a video about "What happens when your DNA is damaged?" and doing a practice safety quiz.  All this work is due Friday.  On Friday, I would like to check your supplies and would also like to give you a quiz on Cell Anatomy.

Science 10:  I collected the signed outlines.  Please have your's signed for next class if it was not submitted today.  We categorized the safety rules, and drew and labelled the 8 WHMIS symbols.  We watched a video on cell function, then did a WS on cell anatomy that is due next class.  Please have your kit together (binder, paper, calculator, pens and pencils, ruler, tie for long hair) by Friday, so I can check it.

Science 8: Today we did lab 7-4, which showed that temperature remains constant when materials change state.  Heat that is added or removed goes into changing state, not increasing the temperature.  We graphed temperature vs time, and determined the melting and boiling point of water.

Tomorrow is your final.  Take your text book back before coming to room 313.  Hand in your binder contents at the side counter of our classroom before you start your exam.  You will need your calculator, ruler, pencil and eraser.  Bring a drink and snack if you like.

Earth Science 11:  After a Rocks and Minerals review, we did an Astronomy Test.  Counting this task is optional.   After more Rocks and Minerals practice, we watched a documentary about Asteroid impact craters.

You have a final exam Tuesday morning.  You will need your calculator, pencil, and ruler.

Science 8:  Optics and Waves Key Terms List:  trough, crest, transverse wave, longitudinal wave, wavelength, amplitude, frequency, reflection, refraction, spectrum, ROYGBIV, Radio waves, Microwaves, Infrared, UV, Xray, Gamma ray, incident ray, refracted ray, angle of incidence, angle of refraction, angle of reflection, normal, convergent, divergent, convex mirror, concave mirror, lens, focal length, principle axis, parallel, retina, lens, cornea, sclera, ciliary body, optic nerve, aqueous humour, vitreous humour, iris, pupil.  We wrote down key terms by looking through our binder, and spent time with a partner reviewing their meaning.  Convex lenses were given to everyone, and we measured the focal length.  Finally, we finished with an assignment on wave and optics, which is due on Friday.  Our Final exam is on the morning of Thursday, January 25th.

Earth Science 11: We took notes on Galaxies, and read pg 675-679, sketching the 4 types of galaxies.  We finished off with a crossword on the solar system.  Our Final exam is on the morning of January 23rd.

Science 10:  After reviewing the star life cycle, we read about Galaxies (13.5, from a hand-out) and completed the Galaxies WS.  There was time to mark pg 418 from Tuesday and the Biology Unit Review practice test from keys that were on the side counter.  Our Final exam is on the morning of January 24th.

Science 8: Today we made some changes to our database using the functions found within Excel.  This is not due on Thursday, rather, I would like you to spend 30 minutes studying for Science 8 or your other favourite final exam.

Use the functions of Excel to use your information in different ways. 

The instructions below will as you to create several tabs within your Excel spreadsheet, and label them in a specific way.

1.      In the first tab, keep an original copy of your database.  Label it “1 Original”

2.     Cut and paste the entire spreadsheet into a second tab.  For this second tab, edit it the sheet down to a list with 2 columns only:  Volcano Name and Country.  Sort this list alphabetically by Volcano Name.  Call it “2 Volcano & Country”.

3.     For the third tab, create a list with 2 columns only:  Volcano Name and Height.   Order the list from highest to lowest.   Use the equation function to find the sum total height of all the volcanoes.   Use the equation function to find the average height.  Call this tab “3 Height of Volcanos”

4.     For the fourth tab, sort the volcanos by Continent.  Call this tab “4 Volcano by Continent”

5.     For the fifth column, edit the sheet down to just Volcano and Years Since Last Eruption.  Create new column called Year of Last Eruption.  Use the equation editor to calculate the year of last eruption.  Cut and paste this formula for the 14 other volcanoes.  Sort this list and order it from most recent to most distant eruption.

Earth Science 11:  Activity 14B was collected, and we did a rocks & minerals review that was collected too.  Today learned about spectroscopy, which helps astronomers determine the elements present in stars and speed of galaxies.  We finished with a year end review of Atmospheric Science.

Science 8:  Today we started with review of Biology (digestion, cell anatomy, viruses) and watched a video on Digestion.   We did a practice test on Biology topics (Ch 2 & 3 mostly), which is due Wednesday.

Earth Science 11:   Activity 14B (Star Map) is due on Wednesday.

Science 10:  Read Section 13.1 from Science Probe 9 and do pg 418 # 1,2,4-8, 10, 13, 16 in sentences (not due Wednesday).


Monday, January 15

Science 10:  Today we spent time on our Force of Gravity Lab, determining the slope of our graph and answering a few questions.  No homework is due - so with your time, do some review to help you prepare for your favourite final.  Your Final Exam is on Wednesday, January 24th

Science 8:  After writing some notes on 3 Places where Volcanoes Form, we went to the Library to finish the Volcano Database.

Earth Science 11:  Read pg 629-635 (about asteroids and comets) and complete the WS titled "Asteroids, Meteoroids, and Comets".

Science 10:  Due Monday is the Gravity Lab (graph only, no discussion questions), the anatomy of the Sun diagram (features labelled, and described), # 1-5 from old Science Probe 9 Sun section, and a nearly complete "condensed notes" on the Biology Unit.   Spend some time this weekend preparing for your favourite final exams.

Earth Science 11:  Sun Work sheet (with a labelled sun structure diagram on the back) is due Monday.  Now is a good time to study for your final, which is not far away.

Science 8:  Today we watched National Geographic's "Volcano!" documentary about the Krafts.  You were to make a list of volcanic hazards.  Spend some time this weekend preparing for your favourite final exams.

Some Term 2 Grades for you.  These have not yet been combined with Term 1 to form your course grade, but this will be happening soon.  Thursday, January 18 is the last day to hand in overdue and missing work to me.

Science 8:  Volcano Database Assignment: # 1-3 are due Friday.

1.  Open a new Microsoft Excel 
spreadsheet.  Save your spreadsheet to your One Drive on your Office365 Account. If Justin Trudeau was doing this assignment his file name would be "Volcano Database Justin Trudeau January 11 2018".

2.  Create column headings:  Number, Volcano Name, Country, Continent, Height, Nearest City, Nearest Ocean, Years since last eruption, Casualties of last eruption, Activity, 

3.  Research between 10 and 15 famous volcanoes, and fill in as many columns as you can.  Start with your favourites:  Mt. Baker, Kiluea, Mt. Fuji, Mt. Wannahawkalugi, etc.  Gather all your information using the web.   DO NOT print your excel spreadsheet.  Share it with me:  ggale@sd19.bc.ca  

4.  Find a blank world map on the web and print it to the IT Lab printer.  Show all your volcanoes with the standard map symbol, and write the corresponding number by the symbol.  Hand in your map after your name and the date has been put on it.
 




Science 10:  pg 394 # 1-17 in sentences from the photocopied hand-out.  Finish the graph (procedure step 3) for the Gravity Lab, but leave the rest for Friday's class.  Create a sheet of condensed notes on the Biology Unit:  any material from the start of the course until October 5th.




Wednesday, January 10

Earth Science 11:  Today we read about the Inner Planets and answered questions in a small work-booklet.  The second half was spent watching "Star", about the sun.

Science 8:  Today we started with a review of seismology, plate tectonics and local rivers.  We did a worksheet titled "Getting to know the Plate Boundary Map", which is due on Thursday.
We finished with review of cell structures.

Earth Science 11:  Read pg 615-618 and complete the Moon WS.

Science 10:  Today we spoke about preparing for final exams, and how a little bit of time spent studying each day makes a large difference in performance.  We went over pg 385 # 2-12.  We did a lab on Gravitational Field strength, but this is not due Thursday.  On Thursday, I will collect any remaining Lab14Bs (Beginner's Star Map).  With no work due on Thursday, you have some time to prepare for your favourite final exam.

Science 8:  Today we started by looking at the calendar and speaking about our January 25th Final Exam.  We  reviewed local mountains (Copeland, Frisby, Revelstoke, Mackenize, Cartier, McCrae, Begbie, Mapherson, Boulder, and Kirkup) and rivers/streams (Columbia, Illecillewaet, Jordan, Tum Tum, Beaver, Eagle).    We read section 17.1 from a hand-out about the structure of the earth and everyone created a lablelled and colored cross section of the Earth.

Earth Science 11:  Today we started by looking at the calendar and speaking about our January 23rd  Final Exam.   We reviewed Rotation, Revolution, Precession, and the 9 planet names in order.  After reading pg 612 - 614, we did activity 13C from a hand-out.  The last 20 minutes was spent finishing the documentary called "Giants".

Science 10:  Today we started by looking at the calendar and speaking about our January 24th  Final Exam.  We reviewed the 9 planets, and various types of motion that planets perform (rotation, revolution, precession).  Due Tuesday is pg 385 # 2-12.  Due Wednesday is Lab 14B, a beginner's star map.
